The Violin

The violin is a bowed stringed instrument and is the highest pitched member of the violin family which sits along side the other members of the violin family - the viola, cello, and double bass. The violin has four strings tuned a fifth apart, to the notes g, d’, a’, e’’: On early violins the strings were of pure gut but today may be of gut, gut wound with aluminum or silver, steel, or perlon.

Sheet music for the violin is often provided to students by the conductors of their orchestras or their private teachers who wish to learn to play this fine instrument. For players who aren't officially students anywhere, however, there are a wide variety of sources from which to obtain sheet music. Very recently, the Internet may actually have surpassed music stores as the best place to find new pieces to play.

An enormous variety of violin sheet music is available for free download from the Internet. Violin players of any skill level should be able to locate the sheet music they want online, and in some cases, even for free. Sheet music can be free to share online if two qualifications are met. First, it must be seventy years or more since the piece was composed; after this amount of time, creative works enter the public domain. Specific editions of a work can still be protected by copyright, however, as editors and arrangers maintain their own copyrights over versions they have created.

The Clarinet

In his earlier orchestral pieces such as the two Serenades and his Symphonies, Brahms wrote for the clarinet, but his interest in the clarinet was to be expanded once he met a virtuosic clarinetist named Richard Mülfeld. His musical career began as a violinist but Mülfeld soon rose to be the leading clarinet player of his generation. Becoming friends soon after being introduced, Brahms and Mülfeld would discuss the possibilities of the clarinet, with Mülfeld often playing pieces of the repertoire in his own style for Brahms.

Brahms had decided to retire from composing in the late 1880s. However he was so inspired by Mülfeld’s playing that he gave up these plans, and composed the Clarinet Quintet (Op. 115) and Trio (Op. 114) in 1891, as well as two Clarinet Sonatas in F minor and E flat (Op. 120) in 1894.

The Clarinet Quintet was premiered by Mülfeld and the Joachim Quartet on December 12th, 1891. It has been considered a pinnacle of music written for clarinet ever since. Most clarinetists will incorporate at least one of Brahms pieces for clarinet into their repertoire, with many clarinetists choosing to learn all Brahms wrote for the clarinet.

Sheet Music Online

Before people started selling sheet music online, you had to rely on music and music instrument stores to carry everything that you need. This was fine if you played the Piano or the Violin. But, what happens if you wanted to get sheet music for the Oboe, Viola or other instruments that are not at the top of the teenager choir list? And even if you could locate a store, would you have the time to check out their items?

Now the internet has taken some of the guess work out of the process. You can type “buy sheet music” into any search engine and come up with a long list of sites that will have what you need. The internet has opened up such a wide range of possibilities that you can even get sheet music that was custom designed for a single instrument or to take a choral performance and trim it down for a solo, or a small group.

The internet also gives you the ability to comparison shop. Music is possibly one of the most expensive hobbies around. If you take into account the cost of tutoring, engagements, musical instruments (and their various replacements if you have children), maintenance, repairs and sheet music, it can cost a small fortune to keep up your skill.

Children and Musical Instruments

Many parents want to encourage their children to learn to play a musical instrument, to encourage their musical development.

The first instrument is often a music keyboard. These are reasonably priced and stimulate an interest in music even in very young children. Ask your school music teacher for advice, because some of the very low cost keyboards are very limited. The higher priced keyboards play notes softer if they are hit less hard, more like a piano.

Many children may find it easier to play woodwind instruments like a clarinet than brass instruments like trumpets and trombones. Woodwind instruments do not require the lip vibrations that brass players need.

There are more professional violinists than players of any other instrument. This is one reason parents often encourage their children to take up the violin. Buying a violin is a tricky business. If your child is taking up the violin, or any instrument, it might be an idea to rent rather than buy, until you see how your child takes to the instrument. That is the point at which you should consider buying.

The Guitar

The guitar is a stringed instrument where the musician plucks or strums the string to make a note. It is a fretted instrument where the musician places his or her finger in order to make different kinds of notes.  Modern guitars have six strings that have the standard tuning of E A D G B E. It is played either by strumming or by plucking the strings. There are two broad types of guitars available today. These are acoustic guitars and electric guitars.

Acoustic guitars are more traditional and are not dependent on any amplification device. This is because the shape and the features of the guitar itself create enough sound to be heard by a handful of people. Today, some acoustic guitars are built with electronic devices for it to be automatically be amplified when it is plugged in to an amplifier. The bodies are hollow to create the amplification of sound.

In electric guitars, the body is made solidly or semi hollow and produce little sound without the help of any amplification device. This means that in order for people to hear the sound clearly from an electric guitar, it has to have an amplification device connected, called the amplifier. There are different gadgets and effects that you can do with electric guitars and are usually used in blues and rock and roll music.

The different sounds that an electric guitar can produce are often hard or even impossible to produce in the acoustic guitar. For example, the distortion effect, the extensive hammering and pull offs, wah effects, phasers effects, compression effects, equalization effects, harmonizers, vibrato effect, flanging effect, chorus effect, speaker simulators and other effects.

If your child wishes to learn to play a musical instrument, try to encourage them to follow up on it. If they don't come up with it on their own, you can always suggest it to them. It may do them a world of good.

For one thing, it develops self discipline, because practicing is a necessity of playing well. It can give them a sense of accomplishment which is very important for young children. They will find themselves enjoying a craft which has brought many people great joy through times. And perhaps, if they are good at it, they may be able to rely on scholarships in their future. You never know what kind of benefits this could bring!

The Exotic Didgeridoo

I can imagine you have either read this word in amazement and have no clue what instrument I am talking about or you have seen one played on TV. In any case, the didgeridoo is a very exotic instrument from Australia.

Each didgeridoo has a key or root note, and they can be made of several types of wood, some better than others. Placed on the mouthpiece is bee's wax which makes for an airtight seal against the face as well as protecting one's mouth from getting cut by sharp edges. It is played in a quite complicated way. You place your mouth in the whole at the top of the hollowed wood on the bees wax coating. Then you vibrate your lips against the edge of the wood, filling your cheeks with air at the same time to keep the sound constantly flowing. The sound never stops because you circular breathe-in through the nose and out through your mouth at the same time.

Musical Instruments - How To Choose The Right One For You

Many people want to take on playing a musical instrument as a hobby. It is a known fact that playing music can help relax. But how do you choose the one you will most be comfortable with?

You can, of course, go to a music store in your area and try some instruments out. Some people have a very clear idea of what they wish to play. Some people love the electronic stunts of a good synthezizer on top of an electric keyboard. Some people dream of playing the drums from a very early age.

But if you want to be sure, think of how comfortable you are with the co-ordination of your different body parts. To play the drums, you must have a good co-ordination between your hands/arms and your feet. You can develop it of course, but sometimes thinking ahead about these things can help you make the right decision. Are you good with your fingers? Are they flexible? Will breathing exercises make you feel OK and won't tire you out?
Consider these questions before you make your choice.

Choosing a musical instrument to play is a process by itself. But after deciding what you wish to play, you can find your chosen musical instrument online for purchase. Obviously, this can save you time and hassle, but at the same time, there are things you need to be aware of.

But beyond the expensive delivery cost, if you are just starting your musical adventure, a hands-on experience in a local musical store will do you a lot of good. For instance, you can choose one of thousands of different electric keyboard models. Or you may wannt to try different types of guitar. When it comes to saxophones, for example, you may want to try and choose between alto and tenor. In many cases you may need to purchase some accessories for your chosen musical instrument. And by buying it in a physical store and bringing it home on your own, you can insure that it will arrive without any damage and in great condition.
